10U Lakers win Kincardine 11U tournament

The Leamington 10U Lakers made the trip to Kincardine this past weekend and despite an uphill battle against older teams, they brought home the gold from the Rob Davidson 11U tournament.

The tournament kicked off on Friday with a dominant statement win as the Lakers dismantled the Saugeen Shores Sting 14-6.

Saturday proved to be a test of endurance and narrow margins.

The Lakers dropped a hard-fought 5-3 decision to the Listowel Legionnaires, a game where they jumped onto the scoreboard early but unfortunately lost the lead late in the action.

They followed that with another razor-thin loss, falling 11-10 to Mississauga North.

Despite a 1-2 record in preliminary play, the Lakers’ strong defense and gritty gameplay allowed them to squeak into Sunday’s bracket, locking down the 7th seed.

Sunday morning brought an entirely new obstacle. Several players and coaching staff members woke up battling a suspected foodborne illness, leaving the team with a severely short bench.

With their backs against the wall, the remaining Lakers stepped up to the challenge, pushing harder than ever. They opened the playoff round by crushing the St. Catherines Cobras 15-6 in the quarter-finals.

Moving into the semis, they once again faced the Saugeen Shores Sting, routing them 8-1 to punch their ticket into the finals.

The ultimate redemption came in a spectacular rematch against the Listowel Legionnaires. The Lakers trailed by as many as four runs early on but refused to quit.

Clawing their way back pitch by pitch, they completed a thrilling comeback to best Listowel 7-6, capping off a weekend defined by pure determination and team spirit.
