The Leamington Flyers returned to action on Sunday, January 4 by bombarding the visiting Caledon Admirals 13-1 on the strength of Ashton Darocy’s six-goal record-setting performance. A crowd of 448 fans were present to see the home team romp.
It didn’t take the Flyers long to assert control.
Near the seven-minute mark of the opening period, Brendan Cooke cut through two Caledon defensemen then whisked a backhand into the Admirals’ net.
At 8:53, Darocy began his productive night by flicking the second goal while on the Caledon doorstep.
Caledon starter James Meredith ended his night at 12:12 when Brayden Degelas took a screen shot from the slot that eluded him. Calem Yorke took over for the Admirals just before the visitors notched their lone goal. Darocy connected next into an open right side then Ethan Walker’s shot during a goalmouth scramble found the target for a 5-1 lead after one.
By that juncture the Flyers’ had the game won but continued to play hard and Darocy would tab two of their second frame tallies.
His hattrick goal came on a two-man breakaway that he ended by tapping the puck into the open left side. Darocy’s fourth came late in the period after Landon Bernard had drilled a powerplay goal.
Walker launched his second of the night at 6:21 of the third on a pass from behind the Admirals’ net with Brendan Cooke completing his own hattrick by notching the next two Flyers’ markers.
Darocy then capped his historic night with two goals in a nine-second span. His fifth goal came at 17:24 when he slipped a rebound past Yorke, and then at 17:33 plucked a Caledon pass and drove to the net’s left and cannoned a shot into the twine.
“It was nice to see our guys put the puck in the net. We came out strong and didn’t let the foot off the gas pedal,” said head coach Dale Mitchell. “We need to continue with this momentum and keep it going.”
The Flyers will host the Niagara Falls Canucks here on Thursday, January 8 at 7:10 pm.
