The 10th annual Lightning Bolt Walk and Run hosted by UMEI attracted over 200 participants on Saturday, September 26 at Point Pelee.
The trails behind the Visitor Centre were full of those doing the 5k walk, the 5k run and the 10k walk, providing the perfect backdrop on a cool September morning.
In all, about $30,000 was raised from the event, which is a major fundraiser for the school. $20,000 of that amount was raised through the many corporate sponsorships, while pledges and registration fees raised the rest.
The day started with a pair of kids races and that gave way to the runners and walkers taking to the main course. All were treated to Mennonite sausage and refreshments, wqith door prizes and medals going to many in attendance.
Ethan Dyck, 16, was the fastest of the 5k walkers, traversing the course in just under 31 minutes.
In the running events, the top male finisher in the 5k was Leamington’s Brayden Mazzella, who finished about 14 seconds ahead of Kingsville’s Alex and Adam Berg at 19:14. Kingsville’s Ashley Berg was the fastest female with a time of 23:16.
In the 10k run, Abram Hamm of Wheatley took the top male time in 35:39 with Tania Carmona of Leamington bringing in a top time of 48:05 for the women.
