Kids Fishing Derby attracts over 200 junior anglers

The annual Southwest Outdoors Club Kids Fishing Derby was held on Saturday, July 4 at Wheatley Harbour’s east side, with about 200 youngsters and 100 parents taking part.

Each participant was treated to a hotdog lunch, a free prize from the prize table and the use of a fishing rod and worms for the big day.

Occasional squeals were heard as little anglers hauled in a fish, took it to the measuring table and had it recorded in the book on the off-chance they might have the biggest.

Eight bicycles were given away through a random draw with four ages groups represented and a boy and girl in each category drawn.

When the morning was over, Dylan Coppola had the biggest fish with a 24.5 inch sheepshead. He took the 8-12 age group prize.

Xylon Scratch brought in a 21.5 inch bullhead to take home the 4-7 age group trophy.

Sadie Mummery won the 0-3 age group with a 20.75 inch carp and Hudson Lemieux took home the trophy for the 13-17 age group, hauling in a 19.25 inch carp.

SWOC President Dan Reive was happy with the turnout, despite the extremely hot muggy day and said plans are already underway for next year.

Young angler Dylan Coppola holds his 24.5-inch sheepshead, the largest fish of the day, as Don Wigle helps display the winning catch at the Southwest Outdoors Club Kids Fishing Derby.
