Sharks topple unbeaten Lakeshore

After opening the season knocking off powerhouse Essex, the Wheatley Omstead Sharks capped off a busy eight game September schedule on home ice in the same fashion they opened the 2026-27 campaign by besting the undefeated and defending league champion Lakeshore Canadiens with a thrilling overtime victory.

Trailing 1-0 after two periods, the locals showed poise and discipline which paid off with a powerplay play marker by team points leader Rory Sandison as he calmly undressed the visiting netminder at the top of the crease five minutes into the final frame. Ryan Basile and Josh Chauvin were instrumental with some pinpoint passing. With each team failing on their respective odd man advantage, the gruelling battle would go to a seven-minute 3 on 3 overtime.

After four minutes had passed, a puck battle at the Sharks’ blue line by Vito Alfano and Grant Symons enabled Alfano to break open and feed a perfect saucer pass to Ryan Basile, who took off outracing the opposition to bury the game winner.

Sharks’ players and bench staff erupted with excitement to celebrate the victory.

A breathless coach Kyle Quick said, “I give a ton of credit to our group, this was a great team effort. Everyone contributed 100 percent and even being down after two against a strong opponent there was no quit, which was encouraging to see,” adding, “the more our guys keep buying in like that the more success we will generate as the season goes on”

The Sharks host Walpole Island on Wednesday, October 7 and look for revenge on the scoresheet at   Dresden on the 9th. They return home on the 14th to start a pivotal four games in eight nights.

Sharks’ merchandise goes a long way to support the locals and is available at home games or contact the team online.
