Forty shoppers were lined up before the doors were even open as gently used ladies’ clothing, shoes, handbags and accessories, numbering in the thousands, were available at the Ladies’ Clothing Swap in the Kingsville Community Centre on the morning of July 18.
A buzz of activity preparing for the event saw a large team of volunteers organizing for the swap the day prior, with KCC Executive Director Kim DeYong saying the event demonstrates the special role that community centres play in bringing people together for a common purpose.
“The Kingsville Community Centre is uniquely positioned to organize community events like this because of the incredible dedication of our senior volunteers and the generosity of local residents. Every piece of clothing that finds a new home instead of ending up in a landfill is a win for our environment and another opportunity to provide quality clothing, free of charge, to someone who can use it,” said DeYong.
Following the event, any remaining items will continue to benefit those in need. Clothing will be donated to Kingsville’s Altr Thrift Store, shoes will make their way to the Kingsville Lions Club for the Soles for Souls program, and additional items will be shipped to Canadian Food For Children, ensuring nothing goes to waste.
Beth Reitsma made her way to the clothing swap from Cottam. Reitsma provided some donations for this swap and was looking to add a sweater or two to her wardrobe.
